Title: Further Exchange on 'Where does Ones Obligation to Discover the Truth End?' Question/Comments: I understood your answer pretty much, however, when you say in your reply "A sincerity of heart and mind and an openness to readily accept the truth from whichever source and in whatever form is, in my opinion, what is expected from an individual, and it is hoped the Almighty, with His all-encompassing mercy shall accept his/her efforts on the day of reckoning.", I would just like to know what is the source of your opinion? I mean, is there a surah in the Quran where Allah has said that this is what is expected of his servant? Please Specify and give references where possible? Thanks, Atif Aziz Pakistan Answer: The Quran reads: "O men! I am sent unto you all, as the Messenger of Allah, to Whom belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth: there is no god but He: it is He That giveth both life and death. So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the Unlettered Prophet, who believeth in Allah and His words: follow him that (so) ye may be guided." (7:158) In order to be successful in the hereafter, the main goal of this life, we have been told in the Qur'an is to follow the Prophet (pbuh). Quite obviously, we, Muslims, try and understand what we have received from the Prophet (pbuh) i.e the Qur'an and his Sunnah . We also make use of other sources of information and eventually reach an understanding which we should ideally implement in our lives. In this process, we can falter both in terms of our understanding as well as in acting upon that understanding. The moment we realize our mistake, we can take remedial action. To make this entire process of learning, appreciating, accepting, following and correcting fruitful, there has to be some a priori requirements. To me, the most natural requirements are what I listed in my response and I believe they can serve us in all spheres of our lives. Regards Razi Allah January 22, 2003
