A Further Clarification on 'Marriage with non-Muslims'
Title: A Further Clarification on 'Marriage with non-Muslims' Question/Comments: I just read your section on women marrying non-Muslims and that this is open to interpretation. However, if one did want to marry a Christian man (who wants to raise his children Muslim but does not want to convert yet and not convert for sincere reasons), how would one find a Muslim to officiate the marriage Many Muslims are adamant about saying this is prohibited. Your website is incredibly helpful and is of great service to all of us. Answer: As I had clarified in my referred response , the matter of a Muslim woman marrying a non-Muslim man, has neither been expressly prohibited nor allowed by the Islamic Shari`ah . It is because of this, that a difference of opinion regarding the allowance or the prohibition of the matter can exist among Muslim scholars. Keeping the fact that there can be a difference of opinion in this matter, in perspective, one can logically derive that in the absence of a legislation of the state in this matter, if a person does not hold such a marriage to be allowed then he should not officiate such a marriage, while on the other hand, if he holds such a marriage to be allowed in Islam, he should then act according to his honest opinion. It should, however, remain clear that whatever legislation is passed in the referred matter, it would, in no case be related to the reasons or the motives of not converting to Islam. Whatever the reasons for his not converting to Islam - whether sincere or insincere - the law should be implemented irrespective of that. 16 th June 2000
